Oriental Cockroaches

What Is An Oriental Cockroach?

When it comes to identifying Oriental cockroaches, you must first understand that male and female cockroaches of this species look quite a bit different from each other. Male Oriental cockroaches are just under an inch long at 25 mm in length and have wings, while female Oriental cockroaches are just over an inch long, measuring at about 33 mm, and don't have wings. Both the male and female Oriental cockroaches are a shiny black or dark reddish-brown color.

Are Oriental Cockroaches Dangerous?

Like other cockroach species, Oriental cockroaches have habits that make them prime carriers for harmful diseases and bacteria. Garbage bins, old drains, sewage systems, and piping are all areas that cockroaches frequently travel through meaning that, if they subsequently travel across your counters or get into your food, they will leave behind all the nasty bacteria and disease that they picked up in those unsanitary locations. Some of the common bacterial pathogens spread by Oriental cockroaches include salmonella, streptococcus, and staphylococcus. These illness-causing bacteria spread by these roaches can be a major health concern if the sickness isn't identified and dealt with properly.

Why Do I Have Oriental Cockroaches?

Most cockroach species prefer to live in areas that are warm, dark, and moist, and that provide them with a steady supply of food, and Oriental cockroaches are no exception. These roaches thrive in humid spaces where the air is saturated with moisture and warmth. These conditions make a great place for Oriental roaches to reproduce. Leaking pipes and faulty plumbing are also a safe haven for Oriental cockroaches, meaning that once they find a leaking fixture, they will likely settle down there and begin multiplying.

How Do I Prevent Oriental Cockroaches?

Keeping cockroaches out can be difficult to do on your own. And, even if you follow all the general roach control prevention tips (such as fixing leaky piping, reducing overall moisture, and sealing off entry points), preventing Oriental cockroaches from getting onto your property is nearly impossible without help from a trusted pest control team.
