Wolf Spiders

What Are Wolf Spiders?

The name wolf spider is given to a large family of spiders that are hairy, very active, and don’t use their webs to hunt. Instead, wolf spiders track down their prey and hunt using their sharp eyesight and quick movements. The size and coloration of wolf spiders can be extremely varied, but they typically measure anywhere from ¼ of an inch to just over an inch in length, and they can be varying shades of browns, grays, and blacks with darker markings. Their earth-toned coloring and mottled markings benefit wolf spiders by allowing them to blend into their surroundings as they hunt down their prey. These spiders have stout, robust bodies and eight long, spiny legs.

Are Wolf Spiders Dangerous?

Despite what their name may lead you to believe, wolf spiders are not aggressive like some other species of spiders. However, they will not hesitate to bite you if they feel threatened or cornered. Bites from these spiders are not fatal but can be incredibly painful, so it is important to take caution when dealing with these spiders. Individuals who are bitten by wolf spiders will show signs of swelling and redness around the location of the bite. No medical problems associated with a wolf spider bite have ever been reported, but you should still have the bite examined by a medical professional for any signs of an allergic reaction or infection.

Why Do I Have Wolf Spiders?

Most of the time, wolf spiders are active at night and rest in sheltered areas during the day. Sometimes, these sheltered areas happen to be inside your home or business. If you have an existing insect problem, wolf spiders will typically stick around to hunt and feed on those insects. But these spiders usually enter by mistake. Wolf spiders can usually be found near floor level of buildings when they find their way inside, often hiding under furniture, cabinets, and around baseboards.

How Can I Prevent Wolf Spiders?

In general, spiders can be difficult to get rid of, and when you have a wolf spider infestation, it doesn’t get any easier. There are a couple steps you can take to help prevent wolf spiders from getting inside such as sealing crevices and cracks in your foundation with a caulking gun, making sure windows are properly sealed, and installing door sweeps on your exterior doors. However, the best and most effective way to keep wolf spiders off your property is by enlisting the help of a pest control professional.
